IO Pod: A Versatile, Adaptable, and Multi-functional Bunk Bed

Designers Mina Panic and Carlo Filippo Negri Create a Sustainable and Transformative Children's Bed

IO Pod, a unique bunk bed design by Mina Panic and Carlo Filippo Negri, offers a multi-functional space for children to sleep, store, and study. Inspired by the challenge of designing for children and the desire to create a lasting, adaptable, and fun product, the IO Pod stands out for its versatility and sustainability.

The IO Pod is not just a bunk bed. It can be configured in numerous ways, including as two separate single beds, a top bed with a desk area beneath, or a bed and desk separately. This adaptability allows the product to suit a family’s evolving needs. The design's ease of assembly and conversion provides parents with convenience while offering children a piece of furniture they can treasure as they grow.

IO Pod is a testament to sustainable design. The multifunctional aspect of the design ensures that the product can be used over a long period of time and in many different ways. It is made from Scandinavian birch plywood, chosen for its strength, warmth, and durability. Some versions also have an outer laminate layer for extra protection. The manufacturing process combines skilled, local craftsmanship with the latest CNC technology, aiming to minimize waste and achieve high quality in all aspects of design. The product complies with all relevant UK and European safety regulations.

The design process for the IO Pod took eight months, from initial concept through design process, testing, and modifications to the final product. It was produced in Europe and tested by the Furniture Industry Research Association in London. The IO Pod was first shown in London during London Design week in 2013.

The IO Pod was created in response to a request from Panic's daughter who wanted a bunk bed. The designers carried out initial research to understand how such a design could be used and how it could fit into children’s and parents' lives. They also researched safety regulations and testing, resulting in close collaboration with the Furniture Industry Research Association in London. The goal was to create a product that was not only versatile and functional but safe too.

The main challenge in designing the IO Pod was to combine all the key objectives into a single design that children could grow up with and use through various stages of their life. The designers also had to ensure that the engineering behind the concept allowed for easy assembly and conversion for parents. They had to adhere to strict safety regulations during the design process while ensuring that the integrity of their vision for the piece was preserved down to every cut and bend.

The IO Pod is an all-in-one space for children to sleep, store, and study. It features simple and uncluttered lines, combining a playful aesthetic with complete functionality. The pod is multi-functional and can be configured in various ways to suit a family’s evolving needs. The IO Pod was conceived with sustainable thinking applied to its design. Children can use it from an early toddler age through to their teen years and beyond, giving the pod the ability to grow with the child. The design was awarded the Golden A' Furniture Design Award in 2017, a testament to its marvelous, outstanding, and trendsetting creation.
